Improved Design Makes This A Superior Crate

Before purchasing any soft sided crate, pay attention to the warnings of other reviewers about buying them for dogs that don’t want to be contained. If you’ve got a Houdini, buy metal. This crate is updated and improved from the previous model. The most significant change is a better designed pop up mechanism. It’s infinitely easier than before and allows full set up in less than 60 seconds, pretty much using just one hand (and maybe a strategically placed shoulder). The frame is made of visibly thicker metal wire than my previous Midwest model. None of these pop up type soft sided crates will stand up to children using them as chairs without collapsing, but this heavier grade metal will not bend as easily. The mesh covered “windows” look and feel sturdier. A dog hell bent on escape will have to invest a few more minutes to chew their way to freedom. Smarter placement of the Velcro allows the door to be more easily secured in the open position.Something missing on this model are the little window “curtains,” but I think leaving them off was a good call. I don’t recall ever using them and it was a hassle rolling them up just the right way in order to catch the Velcro that kept them open.Midwest took an already good product, obviously listened to feedback, and then made it better. Great product!

Good quality portable crate (NOT a carrying case)

This was extremely easy to set up. My seven year old did it right out of the box, no istructions. It’s that simple to figure out. I like that it folds easily(she also figured that out on her own 😉 and is so compact. I love that it came with a pad! Remember this is not a carrying case so the pad sits on the bottom frame. Overall this is pretty stable for a portable dog tent. I like all the windows for ventilation and light. It gives our dog a clean place to lay while we’re camping. We don’t use it in the car but I could see how this would work great in the back of a truck or SUV if you prefer to contain your dog while traveling. For us, it folds nice and flat and we’re able to stack things on top or under. My only complaint..the mesh is made of PVC and stinks(in an unhealthy way)! Being closed in a vehicle with this, the odor would be very noticeable. I would’ve preferred a less toxic nylon mesh.

    great travel crate

The best portable travel crate out there by far! Very well made, I have two of the older green version, found this one even quicker to set up. Please remember this is a soft sided travel crate for well trained dogs in temporary crating situations. I travel with my dogs to obedience and agility trials and this crate is perfect. Dogs that are uncomfortable in crates, are aggressive or chewers should NEVER be in a soft sided crate. To the reviewer who said this crate could be easily chewed or scratched through, of course it could – those dogs should always be in a metal crate, even when traveling. This is a great crate if used correctly. I also like the new flap free windows.

mesh door gonna fail sooner or later

Our springer, no more than 40 pounds, made short work of the zipper on the door. My wife found some stretchy fabric and put together some buttons and loops to make the door work. I’m sure the dog could work her way out of she really wanted to. But for the zipper, it does a good job. Just don’t plan on absolute security except from the best behaved dog, which ours isnt’t.

very sturdy with metal braces. mesh windows high enough they do not bulge when a dog is curled inside. None of the cloth crates will tolerate chewing and/or heavy scratching so don’t expect it to curb those practices. I wanted something for the dogs to be able to curl up inside and ‘and get away from it”. A den, if you will. Can also easily be placed in back seat of car for quick transport; just don’t leave them unattended in it–this does depend on your dog. Get a metal one if you want greater security –I’m quite happy with it for my purposes.

    Kindle Customer – February 10, 2021

metal frame provides structural integrity, great crate, safe for pets

Perhaps the third time was the charm. The two other soft sided carts I purchased lacked either metal or pvc piping around the crate to form a frame that would make the crate structurally sound. Instead both relied on the stiffness of the entry door to have the crate maintain its shape/form. It only took putting my appropriately sized dog in the one for a few seconds to see the issues with that design. Within seconds she had tipped it over and was scared to death. Of course when the door was unzipped that style would completely collapse on one end meaning you couldn’t leave it open for use throughout the day if desired. This was the least expensive of the three ordered, but had the best support. There is a thin metal framework which pops into place when the crate is lifted from the top from its storage position. An additional U shaped wire goes from the middle across the top. That piece has Velcro straps on both sides and a smaller strap to hold that section in place as a fallback safety measure. While I would prefer roll down closures over all the mesh areas, here at least only the two ends have full mesh. The side ventilation mesh windows are smaller and placed higher up making them not such a target for the dog who may chew. While no soft sided crate is intended for aggresive chewers or puppies and only full metal ones are adviced (check the product language, all the soft side crate manufacturers have a disclamer for use by puppies), it remains that a lot of puppy owners need a crate for when on the go or when moving the heavy metal crate from one location to another is difficult. On those occasions, this is simply perfect. As I place the crate next to my bed at night, I can leave this one there and leave the full metal one in the room where the dogs are left when I am out of the house. As I have an older dog who doesn’t require crating, this second back up crate also provides a location where she can get away from the puppy! Older dogs are fequently a bit jealous of the attention given to a puppy and want everything the puppy has whether they would typically be intereted in the item for not. My 8 year old Havanese could not be convinced to chew on a Nyla bone until the puppy chewed one constantly. At that point she decided she wanted it and started to sneak it away! This crate will provide a second secure crate for those unusual instances when the older dog decides that they want to stay in the crate simply because you need to put the puppy inside! The material is thick and feels very secure. The corners have further fabric protection as those are the points where there is the most stress placed on the fabric by the metal support underneath.Yes this is a bit heavier than the first two I purchased. But please be realistic, if a crate is fundamentally unsound because of the lack of structural integrity what difference does that make? You won’t be able to use one if it scares or injures your dog, no matter how lightweight or cute it is.While named a “tent crate” don’t think this is intended only for camping excursions. While it is great that it can withstand the rigors of outdoor use, most of us who purchase a soft sided crate do so for reasons like mine. There are no stakes for ground support provided so should you be using this for camping, make sure the dogs weight is sufficient to hold the crate on the ground or device a system using rope and stakes to make it more secure for either the lighter weight dog or when the dog is not in the crate. Also there is no cover to protect the dog from the elements in which case rain will be able to enter if it is coming down at any wind driven angle. Not sure how water proof the fabric is, but you can help by coating it with a spray that beads water off fabric to a small extent. Or best yet, bring the crate inside the larger tent/camper with the humans where wind and weather will not be a factor and where the dog will be more protected from all the critters in the area. If you are doing some backyard camping, this would work just find.

This pet carrier has a lot of good points, but also has some flaws. The following is a pros and cons list:Pros-Outside material feels durable and tough-The faux sheepskin pad is soft, thick, and comfortable for your pet-It is large and roomy-It is collapsible and easy to store-The mesh door and windows allow your pet to see outside easily and get plenty of airCons-It can be hard to set up. You have to fight with the sides while simultaneously trying to put the stubborn back bar up-If the back bar is not perfectly secured, it can fall on your pet like a mousetrap-It is overpriced

Biggest fault – No side door

This is a portable, foldable/collapsible pet crate. It collapses down flat with a carrying handle for easy storage and transport, then you just fold it up and your pets can sleep in it. It’s a great product and works really well. Very easy to set up and collapse back down. This is not a pet carrier. It’s a soft sided, foldable crate. You wouldn’t want this for a puppy or chewer that would be able to eat it’s way through the mesh and canvas. You would basically use this if you wanted to contain your pet in your car, your office, at home, camping, etc.. Something that you can easily carry with you and set up.The only big complaint I have on this product is that there is not side door. The opening is only on one end. There are other brands that offer the entire side will open up. I really like having that option. That makes it easier to clean out too. Because of that, I only give it 4/5 stars. If that is not a big deal for you, I would give it 4.5/5 stars. I think it is a little on the pricey side. But it’s a good, well-made product.

Only for calmer dogs and puppies…

A nice looking crate and easily portable, however any dog that wants to get out will have no problem doing so. Our dog ripped out the mesh window and bent the metal frame the first time we used it…we ended up throwing it away after our vacation and figuring we broke even as the price of the crate was pretty much equal to leaving him in a kennel for a few nights. Only recommended for easy going dogs or puppies that like crates and owners who want it for a safe haven for their pet while traveling…do not count on it containing even a slightly anxious or energetic dog or puppy. If your dog is high energy or does not like being left alone you are safer going with a full metal crate or solid plastic traveler even though they are more difficult to drag along while traveling.

    Sturdy but heavy

The frame is metal poles, so the whole thing weighs quite a lot. It took under a minute to figure out and perform complete assembly. The canvas is sturdy as is the mesh, which seems more like a rubber than your typical screen material. I wish it was available in double door, as I use this to transport my cat long distances in a car, but so far it appears to be high quality.

This is a great crate, light, easy to set up and strudy.

We have four dogs of our own ranging from 10 to 68 pounds. We also foster dogs for a local rescue, which often includes picking them up, often from 50-60 miles away, and then transporting them to our house. The rescue requires all picked dogs to be in a crate for safety. We have traditional plastic crates of different sizes which work well but have drawbacks, they are heavy, take up a lot of space (unless you take them apart which leads to the problem of putting them together – lining up bolts, putting on the door, etc.).When flat this crate only is about 3 inches tall and is about 17 pounds. It was so easy to set up we didn’t even have to read the instructions, very intuitive. The instructions turn out to be nice and simple and easy to follow, though again we did it backward. It comes with a nice fluffy rug for the bottom for the dog’s comfort so you don’t have to supply your own. One thing I like about the crate is the mesh “windows” on the side and the mesh front covering, the plastic crates always kind of reminded me of dog jail with their metal or plastic bars over very small windows and their metal door. This crate seems to give the dog both a feeling of security and being protected without the feeling of being caged since there is so much light and the windows are so big.It fits into our full size SUV (but when open only by about two inches vertically). If your dog is a chewer this might not be the crate for you, if not I would highly recommended it. All our dogs have tried it, its big enough for our golden retrievers to do some maneuvering yet seems to make our little 10 pound sheltie mix feel safe from noise.

    Great Vacation Crate

Good quality portable crate for larger dogs. We took on vacation for our medium Labradoodle to sleep in at night and he had plenty to room and seemed to enjoy being inside. Crate is easy to pop-up and takedown and the buckles and handle make it easy to carry and transport. This crate may not be ideal for an aggressive or powerful breed dog but it should last quite a few trips with our doodle.

Super nice and big. Our dog loves it. It’s very tall so unless you have a very large vehicle this is going to block your entire rear view.

    Very nice kennel.

We bought this kennel to fit into the back seat of your Chevy Silverado. German Shepard goes nuts when he sees another dog. Scratched the window sill of last truck. Now he can’t see other dogs so we have much more peaceful drives. Also cuts down on fur flying around. Only thing I would change about it is is a few inches narrower. I don’t have much leg room up front?

    Great for What It Is

The MidWest Portable Tent Crate (26″x25.5″x28″) is a very good tent to hold your special animal companion in the car or outdoors. Four sides of venting help the occupant stay cool, and the synthetic sheepskin pad helps make it a cozy space. Combine this with easy set-up (took me only a few minutes the first time, far fewer the next), built-in handle, and easy-use Velcro straps, and you have an excellent and stylish-looking animal tent that will look much nicer in your vehicle than a steel cage.It is extremely important to remember, however, that this tent IS NOT a steel cage or hard shell carrier. The directions specifically state it is not for chewing animals and aggressive dogs. It states this because, if a dog doesn’t want to be in the tent, it can eventually tear it apart with enough time and effort. As well, this tent IS NOT a carrier – without a hard bottom, this tent would probably be both painful and scary to anything inside if someone tried to use it as a carrier. It is designed to be set up and left until no longer needed, at which point it easily folds up into a nice storable form.Note: The interior straps on my tent were long enough so that they could wrap around the guide wire and give additional (and some would say unnecessary) stability. This is not listed in the manual, but is something that can be done.Rating: 4 Out of 5 Stars. An excellent animal companion tent – just make sure a tent is what you need.

    Much improved upgrade from

We had the Canine Day Camper (tan), but it was a little flimsy and the board that the lining was on was cheap particle board that cracked and it was always a little tricky to get the lining on and off. I was anxiously awaiting MidWest’s new design. This crate has a sturdier design with the metal frame and because of the frame, it’s actually easier to pop-up and break down. The lining is much better. We got 1730SP “Medium” size for our Welsh Terrier and it’s perfect, we probably could have even gotten one size smaller, but he loves to stretch out from his front legs forward and back legs back – this is big enough for him to really move around. It’s super portable. BUT if you have a chewer or a dog that doesn’t want to be crated, this might not be the crate for you. When ours was a puppy, he ripped through the front mesh door (hence the need for another one). He’s much better now and more settled and we no longer have that issue.

    A heavier-duty soft-sided crate

First, a word about soft-sided crates – NO soft-sided crate will contain a dog that really wants to get out. Soft-sided crates should only be used with already crate-trained dogs, and then only under supervised conditions. If you really need your dog to stay in a crate, get a wire crate of a heavy-enough gauge that he can’t use his nose like a crowbar to lever it into pieces and secure the door latches. That being said, this is a heavier-duty soft-side crate, kind of the equivalent to the “two rooms and an awning” tent the whole family camps in vs. the sleek nylon dome you strap onto the back of your bike. This DOESN’T mean it is more likely to contain a dog (see above). It does mean that the crate is generally more durable, something I’ve found to be more important during assembly/disassembly and storage than during actual use. The frame is wire rather than plastic, the “windows” are heavily plasticized mesh rather than the mosquito netting often used. The top and bottom frames are both reinforced with wire strips and don’t just count on the integrity of the “edges” of the box. This makes for a slightly heavier (19# for the 36″ size vs. 14# for the same size by another manufacturer) but also more durable crate. My lighter crate comes with a case and I’m glad – the case shows wear-through at the corners from being slid in and out of storage, scuffs and even a rip from being jammed into the car; I don’t think you’ll have that problem with the heavy nylon and reinforced corners on this crate (and when it is collapsed, all the “mesh” parts are inside and out of harm’s way). On the other hand, I do appreciate the shoulder strap on the other crate’s case… this crate only comes with a handle and there aren’t even rings to which a shoulder strap could be attached. This crate is super easy to put up and take down — definitely easier than the “pull the PVC sleeves apart than insert one side into the other” system that many soft-sided crates use. The hinged wire frame of the case forms a sideways “W” when collapsed. To open, the frame piece that forms the point of the “W” is pulled back to be in line with the two bottom points. An upside-down “U” shaped piece that is attached to the bottom frame is pulled upright (like you’re setting a mousetrap) and popped into place in small depressions in the wire of the top from. It can be Velcro-ed into place along the sides to keep it upright. When the crate is closed, two small straps (think quick-release collar snaps) on either side compress the crate… without them, it wants to “spring open.” These straps are a little annoying when the crate is open – you either have to tuck the bottom piece under the crate, or you’ll be stepping on it (or the puppy next to you will be chewing on it!) The crate pad is the usual fleece-style pad, thin and very washable. It easily fits into the crate when it is collapsed for storage, which is nice. The crate does not have a top opening and the windows do not open, something that I don’t imagine most people care about but can make a difference in access for petting and feeding/watering in severely cramped conditions such as a trial or show. The front door is a flap that is permanently attached at the top. You can keep it up and out of the way with a small tab of Velcro. There are two zipper heads. The zipper seems to be quite sturdy and is *very* easy to close and open. I do get tired of fighting with soft-sided crate zippers that don’t have enough “slack,” but, thanks to the sturdy wire frame in this crate, the nylon doesn’t have to be stretched as tightly as on the ones that depend on surface tension for integrity. My dogs like the crate. They all went into it and tried it out and have enjoyed having it open as a private “den” space throughout the day. The biggest, 25.5″ at the withers and 62# easily fits into this crate and can lounge, even in the spread-eagle “toes up” position, with plenty of room. The subdued colors offered fit with the “camping” theme of this crate, I guess. I know a lot of people who buy brightly-colored lime, orange or purple crates to go with their competition ensembles, however, and I don’t think these colors are going to do much for them.

    great travel crate

Big Animal Crate Not A Pet “Carrier”

This pet crate has some good features for the large breed animals, but not this is big and not a pet carrier in the sense its just too big. So its not like the hard side ones with the handles. This is more a space saving item that can travel with you and setup on location. Here is a pros and cons list:Pros1 Tent like material feels durable and tough and will be weather resistant not weather proof.2 Bedding pad is soft thick.3 Have I said BIG yet.4 Collapsible and easily transported in its flat state.5 Lots of mesh so pet can see out and you can see in to keep check on how they are doing.6 Good air circulation.7 Fairly easy to cleanCons1 Would help if you had three hands to setup so it doesn’t collapse on animals inside causing terrified large animal thrashing and the destruction that ensues. Imagine stampeding canine in canvas bag.2 Costs too much for what it is, but if what it is, is what you need and money is less of an issue, consider it job well done.3 Kind of heavyOnce you get the hang of setup you should have no problems. Takedown is a snap.Should come in camouflage so it would be invisible to the naked human eye. Ok only half joking, camo would be cool though.

    Easy to set up

Much easier to pop up and fold down than my last one. Open two tabs, hold handle and it expands, reach in and move one bar into place and In seconds it is done. Some reviewers have said how “awkward it is to have to crawl in to get the bar” – but it really is not a big deal for me as it is way easier to set up. No trying to push frame apart to get a bar to go into place is a treat. Use for agility class and although it is a bit heavier than my last one – the ease of setup and take down makes up for it. There are bars on the bottom frame that some have complained about cause the pad is a bit thin, but dog doesn’t seem to care. A thicker pad would not permit it to close up so either have a separate one you carry and insert – or live with it! The jury is still out on the plastic/rubber” screen on the front. He lays looking out and toe nails on it pushing on it/ a lot of times, but so far have held up. For the price, I would recommend. To house a puppy or a chewer all day – go with a hard plastic travel one or a metal frame not this one. (Surprised how many reviewers were expecting this to hold up all day with an anxious dog). Folks- Don’t expect a nylon crate to be puppy proof! They can be creative little brats – but this suits the bill perfectly for our purposes and would recommend for the price.

metal frame provides structural integrity, great crate, safe for pets

Put your money to better use please.

Why? This is just a minimal metal frame to hold up plastic material with a thin foam pad. It doesn’t even include a tray to keep water from seeping through to your floor. While it might be OK to keep a well trained Fido from popping on your RV couch while your snooze during the night, don’t expect it to hold your pooch during the day while you run for a field trip. A good claw or teeth could tear the zipper flap easily or determined scratching could get through the material. Pay the extra $30 and get a real crate. So you have to take the same amount of time to screw all the bolts of the crate and yes it does take a bit more space even when apart and stacked, but you still open space for storage when not in use and, more importantly, you have something that will contain Fido. Pay a bit more and Fido can even fly with you,… well sort of. So my husband basically blew $78 at the PX and I’m paying an extra $30 for a tray and that totals to more than the price of a crate. Don’t make the same mistake.Apparently other dog owners think these are necessary since this company is not the only one making these worthless contraptions. Another note, the mesh is wide enough to allow small mosquitos to feast on your dog and the cheap fake lamb wool covering is already rolling off in chunks from only 2 nights of use.

    Don’t waste your money!

Definitely not well made. The bar inside to hold it up was somewhat curved when it arrived. Very difficult to get the bar into place and it has since bent even more. It’s only been used a few times and the canvas has already worn completely through on the pressure spots on the bottom. I will not purchase from this company again.

Purchased the large tent crate from my local pet supply store, because it looked like it would be a great alternative for my English Bulldog puppy that needed a little more space due to a leg injury. After 14 days, the zipper came off track. Tried putting it back on track myself and damaged it even more, on top of the pup getting to the edges and having a chew fest. Unfortunately, I could not make an exchange on this product at my store. 127.00 down the drain :(. Love the soft crate, would buy again if zipper mechanism was easy to fix or replace without the warranty/return hassle + my puppy wasn’t a chew monster.

Our springer, no more than 40 pounds, made short work of the zipper on the door. My wife found some stretchy fabric and put together some buttons and loops to make the door work.

The top and bottom frames ar… Read more
