Ferrets are quickly becoming one of the most popular small
pets because of their spunky, playful personality. They’re highly intelligent
and energetic bundles of curiosity that require as much social interaction,
playtime, and upkeep as a new puppy. Before you bring one of these little balls
of energy home, there are a few things you should know.
They’re Illegal in
Before you adopt, check with your local Humane Society to
find out laws and regulations. If you live in California, Hawaii, New York
City, or Washington DC, unfortunately these little guys are banned. Even if
they’re legal in your state, there may be laws against them under your local
ordinance, so do your research.
They Kind of Stink
If you’ve ever handled a ferret, you’ve likely noticed they
have a naturally musky scent. However, with proper grooming and care, the scent
can be controlled. To keep your ferret’s odor to a minimum, scoop his litter
daily and wash his bedding and cage at least once a week. A clean environment
makes for a clean ferret.
Ferrets should only be bathed once a month. Bathing more
often will strip them of their natural oils and cause them to overproduce more
and have an even stronger smell.
They Need Lots of
Ferrets are very social pets that do best in pairs or small
groups. Consider adopting two ferrets so they will always have a friend to play
with. Ferrets are incredibly playful, and not just with toys – they want to play
with you! Your ferret should have at least four hours out of his cage each day,
at least two hours of that should be spent interacting with you.
They Need a Good Cage
A cage not only acts as your ferret's burrow, it’s also his
safe haven. Because there are so many dangers around your home – wires to chew,
appliances to climb behind, cleaning supplies to get into, etc – it’s very
unsafe to allow your ferrets roam around without supervision.
When purchasing a cage, look for features such a
dual-locking doors, wire spacing large enough for airflow, but tight enough to
keep them contained, and plenty of room. The Ferret Nation is available
in Single Units, Double Units, and has an available Add-On Unit for extra
space. It offers ramps, full-width double doors, resting shelves, and
easy-to-remove base pans for quick clean up.
